Let’s Talk About Design

Let’s start off simple. Some of my friends and family come to me for design ideas. I’m not an interior designer, or a room stager, or even perfectly esthetic in everything I create. But my eyes do see color and shape symmetry. So when I direct my photography clients on what to wear, or help my sister coordinate her living room, I’m always looking for things that match and flow. I guess feeling also has something to do with this. So let me transfer some tips and tricks here.

The biggest thing I would recommend is to just get self aware. Who are you and what do you like? Like sourdough making, I’m also a Pinterest hoe. When I was in college I spent many hours on it instead of listening to my chemistry teacher. Probably a good sign that a nursing major wasn’t for me lol. When it first came out, I genuinely used this platform to discover who I was and what my style was. Then from there, I went to my local Goodwill to start matching what I saw on the pins, to the life I wanted to create.

After a while it just became second nature to look at an item and realize “this isn’t me.” So that’s what I would recommend. Find magazines, websites, a friends chic style, or a movie that you just ADORE and see what items stick out to YOU.

YOU are the author of your creativity and style. So if you struggle to know yourself, you might struggle with designing anything at all. AND THAT’S OKAY! You can be the QUEEN of mix-match and chaos and it literally doesn’t matter. Design is not something that should be pressured or manicured. It is meant to be an expression of your heart and tastes.

I am clearly in my beige era. I lived in a third world country that had SO many colors and overstimulating noises, that it thrusted me into the simple colors of “becoming 30.” But what I also cannot get rid of are the RICH colors of my mermaid roots. So I find a happy medium.

Another trick is to observe colors out in nature. Where is a place that genuinely just makes you breathe SO deeply? Maybe you take some elements from that tapestry and bring it into your home and closet. I live in the lush prairies of the Midwest. So when I wear greens, they are soft and pastel like the subtle ponds and rivers we have here. But let me tell you, when I go to Hawaii, ya girl is is as bright as the lava spewing out of the volcanos. Mostly because my pale skin turns that color on the first day at the beach lol.

Nature is such a gift. I really believe we were created to live in it and adapt it’s characteristics to our lives. So if you just LOVE Arizona reds, work that boldness into your wardrobe and hang a Native American blanket on your wall. I think one day I will eventually turn into a mountain man because I also go to Tennessee every year. But maybe I just need to marry one first ;)

So there you have it! Think on the wonderful things that make you, YOU and get to creating. And don’t forget to be patient. Not everything flows over night.

Cheers!
